Without the compilation tag, LMS will try to interpret whether the album is a compilation or not. If there is a compilation tag, then it will see what the tag is set to (not just that it's there). This has been my experience using FLAC files. Note that with mp3 files, my results were never that consistent or predictable. I'll also Caveat that this was the case years ago
For instance, if I have an album where some tracks have a guest artist, without a compilation tag, LMS will usually interpret the album a compilation because not all ARTIST values are the same across the album. This would even occur on me with the ALBUM ARTIST tag set consistently across the album. In fact, in those cases, LMS would disregard the Album Artist tag for browsing and sorting putting everything under Various Artists in those cases. Consequently, I manually set compilation = 0 on all albums and compilation = 1 on those that are truly compilations. Album Artist is set for all albums with compilation = 0. Album Artist is set to "Various Artists" for those with compilation = 1. That really doesn't make a lot of sense, but it is the only way I can get consistency in other software and it simplifies file management, which I use Album Artist as the root folder. For the purpose of browsing by Album Artist (which represents about 95% of my usage), the system works well. It's not perfect, but I've found that very little is. The metadata system in music files is less than perfect and inconsistent across formats. It would be nice if there was something more standard and perhaps similar to the XMP space in photography. FLAC is close in that it gives a lot of flexibility with tags, and I'm eliminating all my mp3 files if not to get lossless format but instead to get the benefit of FLAC tags; when I can't get rid of lossless, I've been testing OGG files, which are the same tag format as FLAC. Unfortunately, that file format, while quite good for a lossy format, is not as widely supported. I've not looked to see if I can get the flexibility I need in M4A files. My real goal is to just have all FLAC; I'm just not comfortable converting mp3's to FLAC as I want my FLAC files to be truely lossless. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ emalvick's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35382 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109180 _______________________________________________ Squeezecenter mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter
