You're right. I was mentioning what I was doing because only by setting
Compilation=0 or 1 on every track (as a matter of practice) was I able
to get what I expected out of LMS. In other words, the expected
behavior never worked as expected so I forced compilation tags including
Compilation=0. It doesn't mean it wouldn't work without Compilation
tags, but it wouldn't work for 100% of my files including places where I
thought it should work. It became easier in practice to just
automatically tag files with the Compilation=0 tag and then adjust it to
1 when it's appropriate.

By the way, I don't use ID3 tags (no mp3 files) in my system, which was
largely driven by issues with the TCMP and the TPE2 (Band/Album Artist)
tags in LMS and other software. The practice above was also driven by a
desire for software outside of LMS to behave consistently with LMS. It
was even worse when some software would interpret an album as a
compilation while a different one wouldn't. Let alone that some
software pays no attention to the compilation tags (or album artist for
that matter).
