I would second the suggestion for using the CUstom Scan/Browse plugins. What I've done is create a custom tag (all my files are FLAC, so this may not work for other file formats) that essentially creates a DATE tag (or Rlease Date) and have that be the full date in YYYY-MM-DD format. I use MP3Tag to just copy the YEAR tag (which usually has the full date to begin with) to the new DATE tag. I then just create a Browse Menu and sort by the new DATE tag (which needs to be established through the Custom Scan plugin). Otherwise, I treat the DATE tag like a string field so that LMS and other software don't try to force or interpret anything that wasn't intended.
I've not had major issues with the Custom Scan and Browse plugins once they are setup. They can be slower than without the plugins, but I find that only really is an issue after rescans when the menus have to refresh.
