I appear to have found the problem:
In alsamixer, I noticed that on the Playback sliders screen for the USB Sound Device, the PCM Capture Source was set for Mic. I toggled this to Line. (Seems a bit counter-intuitive to find that setting, for PCM Capture, here). So now I need to ensure this happens without using alsamixer each time I select Waveinput. I had "wavin:hw:CARD=Device" set as the source for the favourite. Setting this to "wavin:hw(2,0)" produces audio. This is a bit odd, because I did try various (all) combinations of hw:(x,y) when trying to record a file, but none of these appeared to work (see post above). However, when I set the arecord command back to hw:CARD=Device, it told me that was also busy; this was fixed by a reboot. Living room: SB Touch, with coax to: Marantz PM7005, TDL RTL3 speakers. Dining room: SB Boom. Kitchen: SB Radio 1/4 with battery. Bedroom 1: SB Radio 2/4 no battery, SB Radio 3/4 with battery. Bedroom 2: SB3 1/2, AE 2.1. speakers. Bedroom 3: Slim Devices SB3 2/2, Edirol MA-15D powered monitors. Bathroom: SB Radio 4/4, white, with (and running on) battery.
