I don't know what to say specifically about your exact issue except that in my case, I actually worked around a lot of similar (not necessarily the same) problems by using the Custom Scan and Custom Browse extensions.
Specifically, I used Custom Browse to create a menu item limited to the tag I was concerned with (e.g. ARTISTS). It has avoided issues with compilations, the one off artist that appears as a guest artist on a track, etc. I had done this back in the 7.5 version days before the options for selecting roles (earlier in the thread) existed. But, otherwise, I've just stuck with Custom Browse. It is a work around, but it works (For me). By the way, I have a mixture of multiple artist tags and single artist tags separated with a semi-colon. The system is flexible.
