Not sure if it's relevant, but it seems we've both upgraded to Debian 10 rather than done a clean install. Have you tested with embedded images rather than images in the folder?
I'll have to test flac with embedded images. I think the test files I copied all came with cover.jpg instead of embedded artwork.
