To see what happens - run the same log with a nest mini. I suspect no transcoding or a different command will be used.
If it is the same command then it means something odd about the Pi player. What version of squeezelite is being used ? Otherwise, at a guess your build of sox does not have support for opus filetype as it is a build option.
