Well, driving through red lights at 100mph blindfolded is likely to have serious consequences, more so than powering a Pi by USB from a NAS. And if it causes problems, I can choose to use a separate power supply. This Pi just serves music to a number of devices, and doesn't have to power a USB drive or an output HAT or screen. Seems to have performed fine for a week or so since I set it up.
