The difference between a working folder and the non-working folder was about file permissions, as you hinted.
The non-working permissions were "-rw-rw-r--" on FLAC files and "drwxr-xr-x" on the directory. The working permissions are "-rwxr-xr-x" on FLAC files and "drwxr-xr-x" on the directory. Only the "others" permissions are involved since the Squeezebox Server runs in its own Linux group. Which seems to infer that the "x" makes a difference. But I have plenty of FLAC files in my collection that do not have the "x" bit set for "others", so this is strange... Problem solved for me, but I do not understand why...
