Here for illustration purposes is my setup. Note that the Raspberry Pi / piCorePlayer / LMS / UPnP Bridge plugin does all the "heavy lifting", including the functions you are looking for (crossfade, etc.) - while the Linn DSM is recognized by the UPnP Bridge as a simple network player. I love this setup as it gives me the best of both worlds - the brilliance and limitless possibilities of LMS and its plugins, along with the great sound of the Linn stack.
