I had a similar situation when I was working. I would VPN to the office and the work VPN "closed the pipe" and I couldn't see anything other than what was accessible on the work network. This kind of pissed me off. I ended up using VMWare and put up another instance of my OS under the VM and used that for work. That way my regular stuff was all accessible from my main OS without doing anything to my home network.
