I keep a friend's system running that is running Ubuntu 18.04 and want
to upgrade it to 8.2.0 - is an uninstall and reinstall required? It'd be
nice to keep the configuration and not do it from scratch.

I think the first thing you should think about has nothing to do with LMS: a backup strategy. If you had a backup, you wouldn't have to worry too much about the configuration ;-).

So... grab a copy of the prefs folder (see Settings/Information) to get started.

Usually you should be able to simply install the new version on top of the old one.

If that didn't work, I believe an uninstall would leave the configuration in place. But I'm not 100% sure for all Linux system. Therefore the backup of your files, from which you can restore it if needed.
