To all the respondents:  I did consider installing squeezelite package,
but it comes with a bunch of dependencies which, presumably, LMS
provides internally for the local player. Also it is nice to be able to
manage the player from the web interface, so I wanted to stick with
local player if possible.  Anyway...

I took everyone's advice and replaced the existing binary with one from
Ralphy's most recent build: squeezelite-1.9.9.1391-x86_64.  (The LMS
bundled version is 1.6.5.). It started up fine, so I will monitor it for
2-3 days and see how it goes.
