There are quite a few special characters in linux shell. A good rule of thumb, if it is not alpha-numeric, there is a good chance it is a special character. Either change your password, or do what kidstypike has already highlighted.
The reason we don't do this by default......is that we are trying to keep things as light as possible. The package cifs-utils.tcz has a boat load of dependencies.
