I remember having that same issue in my setup where LMS defaulted to transcoding everything prior to sending it to the players. So I reconfigured LMS to send native flac to the player which was a major improvement but then noticed that a couple of them refused to play which turned out to be because the player doesn't handle larger than 16 bit encoding (even though the libflac version that is part of the player's firmware is stated to be able to handle 24 bit encoded files). Since then I have coded everything down to 16 bit and I do that for every new music file I receive if needed. It's not that big a deal as I need to do a similar thing when I want to take music with me in my car which will only play mp3.
