It doesn't make a difference whether you enter it in the url or in a separate field: as long as it's not SSL encrypted (https) it travels as plain text. If you use a https connection, it's encrypted.

does that happen anyway when you use other RSS readers to log into RSS
feeds?

Yes, except if you the url is https.
