Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to this.

So, first, a general comment on search. I don't much like our search
either, right now. Mostly, however, it has to do with the poor
relevancy than with the partial word searching that you guys are
commenting on.

However, I do have something that might work better. There are, in
fact, some searches beyond the ones Andy listed (he may just have an
older WSDL), and they may give you just what you want :

fastFindArtists(prefix, start, count)
fastFindAlbums(prefix, start, count)
fastFindTracks(prefix, start, count)

These will give you the artists/albums/tracks that start with the
passed in prefix. We haven't performance tested them, but in theory
they're quite fast after the engine has warmed up. (Start and count
provide an offset mechanism for scrolling through long lists, so you
don't grab all the tracks starting with "P", but just the first 10.)

This might address the Carole King issue.

We also have a new search coming out quite soon that does a much better
job with relevance; "carol" will find "Carole King" far more
effectively. However, it still won't do partial word searches ...
that's pretty hard to get right, not even Google manages it. (Try
searching for "carol k" or "carol k singer" on Google, and you'll see
what I mean.)
