When I say "turn it off" it means pushing the red button on the remote.
In other words, it's basically in stanby, with the clock displaying
only.

My SB has no problem connecting to the network. Works perfectly with
the Squeezebox Server.

I know how it acts when there's a dosgy Internet connection. It stops
playing, rebuffers, stops playing, and so on. But this is the first time
in the four years I've owned it that it totally ceases to function and
displays this odd message of "too many files open". What files is it
referring to? When connected to mysqueezebox.com and with my computers
off and nothing else connecting to my home network, I can't possibly
imagine what these "files" are.

In fact, I have the exact opposite problem of what you report. The
web-based remote can control the SB perfectly. The white plastic remote
that I hold in my hand now only gets me an error message of "too many
files open".
