No, it wouldn't be better, it's better that Logitech focus on making
their server software, mysqueezebox service and player firmware
reliable and possible to enhance by third parties. An iPhone app would
also be a competition to their own Controller hardware, many people
would get an iPod Touch and the free app instead of purchasing a
Squeezebox Controller or Duet, the iPod Touch is even cheaper.
The situation would be different if Logitech had 20 developers working
with Squeezebox development but at the current team size of about 5
developers they can't do everything, they need to focus on the stuff
which they are good at which no one else can do. I'm 99.9% sure that
anything Logitech produced on the iPhone/iPad would be very limited
compared to apps like iPeng and SqueezePad. Also, Logitech would be
forced to give it away for free since this is what Sonos do, so they
wouldn't really earn any money on it, it would just be a cost.
I seriously hope that Logitech doesn't walk into this trap, their
advantage is that they have third party developers who willingly for
free makes their products more attractive, there is no reason at all
for them to do extras like this themselves when they can get it for
free from third parties.
If they want to use iPhone/iPad apps in their marketing material, they
would just have to pick up the phone and call pippin or bluegaspode and
I'm sure they would be happy to allow them to include their apps in the
marketing material. The $10 cost for the third party apps isn't an
issue, just skip a burger meal or two and enjoy one of the excellent
remote controls instead.
