I think saying they are "lying" is a bit strong and infers they were
intentionally meaning to deceive.
It costs Spotify time & money to cancel subscriptions so I just don't
see where such a perceived "deception" would pay off for them.
Perhaps "could be worded better" is a bit more accurate.

You also have to keep in mind that Spotify can't be an expert on all
past and present hardware devices from all of the different
manufacturers, Spotify compliant or not.
They specifically mentioned the two current SqueezeBox models that are
indeed Spotify compliant.

Touch and Radio players have a number of features that the older SB
players do not have, like native AAC playback and ability to play
hi-res music files.
But it would not make sense to place on the marketing publications for
these older players "be careful, this player will not play AAC or
hi-res files".
Not disclosing such limitations is no more deceptive than Spotify's
(albeit, maybe poorly worded) explanation of streaming Spotify on
current SB players.

I do sympathise with your misunderstanding of such SB player
compatibility with the Spotify service, I just don't agree that it
rises to the level of intended deception.

As a final note, keep in mind the real reason why the older players are
not Spotify "compliant", it's the record companies that are limiting how
Spotify can be used (which in turn limits which devices can be used).
If such restrictions were different then Spotify would sell more
subscriptions and SqueezeBox would sell more players, where currently
neither one benefits from such restrictions.
