Ok, and they would knowingly do this for what purpose?  To piss off
their customers, refund subscriptions, and develop a PR problem in
here?  :)
As gary suggests, it is likely a marketing mistake, if even that. 
Throw in a potential language translation issue and it gets even more
ambiguous.
I'm certainly glad you got your refund, I had no doubt they would do
so, they seem like a top notch outfit.
