If the problem is a networking one then the issue that you heard should be broadly the same for all content (at least content with same or higher bitrate) ... including for local files. If it only happens when you play BBC stations this way then the suggestions from bpa are the ones for you to research ... but ... apart from the URL trick mentioned, there is very little that you can do to change things without changing the player.
