On Window 2000 and later the machine DNS domain is always automatically
defined in the registry when the machine is an AD domain member, so when
using a search list both are always defined, but only the search list is
used (according to the Windows documentation ....).

I think the comment above specifies the correct behavior, the admin
SHOULD only specify one of domain/search and at most once. If both is
specified, or specified multiple times the result may be implementation
dependent.
Yes, it seems a consistent behaviour.
So it seems the windows version needs to lookup domain first, then
replace it with search if also found.
And I need to reset my wetware implementation.
