2002 Santa Stampede
"Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus." He exists as certainly as lust and
chaos and drunken buffoonery exist, and you know that they abound and give
to your life that warped dream-state that would allow for not just one, but
*hundreds* of Santa Clauses, in various states of disorder. Thus it shall be
this Saturday, December 14.
This year, the Santa madness begins in Oakland at Jack London Square, where
the early-rising East Bay Santas awake at the crack of noon to catch the
1:45 ferry to San Francisco. After a queasy boat ride they'll join up with
the large Santa masses at 3:00 PM at Zeitgeist in preparation for an
afternoon of Feliz Navidad through the Mission District. cmo esta' loco!
After a few hours of Mistletoe Margaritas and Reindeer Burritos, Santa will
head to Union Square for a quick stop at the Gold Dust Lounge before heading
out to join the shoppers selflessly boosting America's economy in the name
of Jesus! (remember him?) But what would Christmas be like without a trip
through that most American of tourist centers - yes - Chinatown! Rudolph the
Red-Nosed Running Dog Lackey will certainly feel at home at the Buddha
Lounge and the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory. After that, the sins of
the old Barbary Coast await the Red Menace, because North Beach is right
around the corner. Bars, strip joints, and clueless yuppies abound for
Santa's pleasure! And if you've made it this far and still want more, there
will be late-night Santa-friendly parties announced on the day of the crawl.
There will be three 'official' meeting spots where you can join the fun:
* Noon - 1:30 PM Moe's Jack London Bar (444 Embarcadero at Broadway, in
Oakland)
(If you're planning to use BART to get to Jack London Square, use the 12th
St. Oakland stop and allow 20 minutes walking time.) From there we'll take
the 1:45 PM ferry ($5.00 fare, purchased on the boat itself) to the SF Ferry
Building, at the east end of Market Street. This group will then work its
way to the next meeting location via MUNI to...
* 3:00 - 4:00 PM Zeitgeist Bar (199 Valencia at Duboce, in SF)
We'll then tour the Mission District, working our way to 24th St. BART. Wear
a red sombrero adorned as a santa hat to convey that South of the Border
Christmas Spirit! Please note that if you wish to continue with the group to
Union Square, you MUST have a pre-paid BART ticket ($1.10 or greater) in
hand when you meet at Zeitgeist. We will not wait for people to futz with
the ticket machines at the BART station, so get your BART fare before
joining the run. In fact, get a ticket today and have it in your wallet!
Having taken care of this detail in advance, we can then smoothly(?) proceed
to the Powell St. Station and stagger up to...
* 7:00 - 7:30 PM Gold Dust Lounge (247 Powell at Geary, in SF)
Chuck the Bartender (tm) will be awaiting our arrival, and has graciously
hosted many unusual groups in the past, so tip well! (In fact, tip well at
every place we visit, since they'll probably be panicking from the sudden
Santa onslaught.) From the Gold Dust the Red Tide will become unleashed upon
Union Square, Chinatown, and North Beach at its own pace. If you come late
try to follow the trail of Santa debris, or pre-arrange to home in via
cell-phones or parole tracking collars.
So join the group whenever you can, and have the appropriate cash on hand to
cover fares and bar tabs. We're gonna roll rain or shine, although if the
weather sucks you might want to fashion a cheezy poncho out of a red trash
bag. Also write down where you originally left your car so you can find it
again on Sunday amidst a mind-numbing hangover.
