DEALER Germany, 1998, 16mm, color, 80 min. Director: Thomas Arslan Can is a small-time dealer on the streets of Berlin. All attempts to lead a normal life with a job seem to fail. His girlfriend Jale, working in the warehouse of a department store, has been pressing him to find a steady job and start a new life. The two see a bright new beginning when Can has a chance to run a bar. Director Thomas Arslan creates a static and claustrophobic Berlin of run-down industrial courtyards and dark hallways to portray the protagonist�s state of mind.
Preceded by SEVDA MEANS LOVE / SEVDA HEISST LIEBE Germany, 2000, 16mm, color, 14 min. Director Sinan Akkus Traditional Turkish moral codes meet contemporary cultural norms and youthful desires in this O. Henry-like tale of love and machismo.
These are the last films of a series called YOUNG TURKS OF GERMAN CINEMA which showcases films by second generation Turkish-German filmmakers who use innovative, visual tools to shape their identities in a new culture.
An exhibition of photographs by Cem Yuecetas, currently a fulbright fellow in San Francisco, is on display in the auditorium.
