On Saturday, June 5th at 8:00PM Oddball Film+Video presents "Carnal Cinema: "Caf

Dream(Stephen Savadian) plus the Atomic Americana short "About Fallout"(Color, 1963) and

The "Nuclear Kiss" has rendered 99% of the population unable to have sex -- they've become
Sex Negatives. The remaining one percent of Sex Positives are required by the government to
perform public sex acts for the benefit (torment?) of the frustrated Sex Negatives. The plot
centers on a Sex Negative couple, Nick (Paul McGibboney) and Lana (Pia Snow, later the
scream queen Michelle Bauer), who are addicted to the nightly avant garde theater shows at
the Cafe Flesh. Caf Flesh is a bizarre and nihilistic nightclub with stark, surreal sets
featuring particpants dressed as animals, pencils and cartoonish secretaries. The
performances are hosted by an obnoxious Joel Grey like Cabaret character Max Melodramatic
who taunts his audience with abusive outbursts like "I get off on your need!".

This 20 year old artifact from the glory days of shot-on-film porn is a rare look at what the
erotic underworld could have been-an alternative to mainstream porn concepts and a future
breeding ground for carnal cinematic creativity. Caf Flesh is a cult camp classic with proto-
industrial music, Italian surrealist inspired sets, projected backgrounds and a tight, acrid
script.
Theres plenty of hardcore sex, inventively shot and integral to it overall sci-fi theme. The
script was written by director Stephen Sayadian and writer Jerry Stahl (later the subject of the
1998 biopic Permanent Midnight). Stephen Sayadian later tried to break into the mainstream
with 1989's "Dr. Caligari" but failed and by the early '90s he had fallen back on sex videos
like "Party Doll a Go-Go"(a retro-beatnik-camp sex flick) and "Untamed Cowgirls of the Wild
West".
Caf Fleshs post-modern porno influenced scores of art porn directors as well as the current
crop of "gonzo-porn" video makers. Its New Wavey "porno chic" syle made it a hot at
midnight movie houses across the US in the 80s and its over-the-top excesses make it a sex
spectacle worthy of rediscovery today.

In keeping with our nuclear theme well also be screening a seldom-seen Atomic Americana
propaganda short "About Fallout"(Color, 1963) made by the United States Department of
defense aimed at dispelling the "myths" of atomic power.

Well be heating up the evening with a hefty assortment of Erotic Shorts and trailers including
"Mondo Erotica", "Dynamite", "Hollywood Blue" and more from the 70s and 80s golden age
of porn.
