----> Event Description <-----------------------------------------------

Luciano Berio (1925-2003) was one of the extraordinary voices of the Darmstadt generation.
Perhaps the most historically-minded member of that group, some of his greatest
compositions are postmodern collages and recontextualizations of older works (including
Mahler's 2nd Symphony in Sinfonia and Schubert's Unfinished Symphony in Rendering).

The sfSoundSeries is comprised of some of the
most talented and creatively original maverick composers and performers in the Bay Area.
For many of its members, simply playing the music of another composer is not a primary
interest, nor do they desire to duplicate the fine efforts of the many other new music
ensembles in the area. Forming genuinely new and creative performances is what this group
does best, and their "Omaggio a Berio" concert is a prime example.

Drawing inspiration from Berio's own interpretation of music history, the musicians of the
sfSoundGroup have devised a creative, yet appropriate way to pay homage to the late and
great italian master. After an initial set of virtuosic performances of a number of Berio's
chamber and solo works, the sfSoundGroup will be presenting a new large collaborative work
that recontextualizes Berio's music inside one of his his own theatric works, "Laborintus II".
Through substantial research and study of Berio's oeuvre, the group has been able to form a
malleable pallette of musical material drawn from over 25 Berio compositions.
Reorchestrated, reshaped, reduced, remixed, repulsed, and recomposed, this music has been
interwoven with one of Berio's most experimental compositions [ first performed at Mills
College in 1967 ] to form something both unique and contemporary. Berio would have
approved.
