----/ The Squid List /-------------------------------------------------- Theatre Flamenco's LAMENTO
Saturday, October 29 8 PM $30 general; $26 student/senior ----/ Event Description /----------------------------------------------- Flamenco is the embodiment of control, passion, and spiritual freedom. The dancers complex, resonant rhythms are on fire yet don't burn out. The soulful vocals are filled with angst, lament, and yearning. For nearly four decades, Theatre Flamenco has embodied flamenco's delicate balance of disciplined power and profound emotion. The company's staying power comes from a passionate commitment to the art form and infusion of new ideas. Powerful revelations about the heights and depths of emotion will be revealed onstage at Theatre Flamenco's 39th annual home season at Mountain View Center for the Arts. Theatre Flamenco's performance in Mountain View will juxtapose flamenco's traditional roots against the evolutionary styles that are developing both at home and abroad. LAMENTO features one premiere by long-time Artistic Director Miguel Santos, along with two premieres choreographed by Carola Zertuche (Theatre Flamenco's new Co-Artistic Director). LAMENTO is named for the latest choreographic accomplishment from the imagination of Theatre Flamenco's Artistic Director, Miguel Santos. LAMENTO is an expression of grief, and its rhythm is the siguiriyas from the cante jondo, or deep song of flamenco. For Mr. Santos, the dance marks a return to flamenco's tradition of using castanets while incorporating steps from the new school. This past March, Miguel Santos attended the Festival de Jerez in Spain, which is recognized as one of the most important international flamenco summits in the world. At the festival, Mr. Santos polished traditional techniques and learned new variants of steps from some of the greatest teachers of the form. All of which inspired his latest dance, LAMENTO. Tempering LAMENTO's darkness will be two premieres by Carola Zertuche. This past year, Ms. Zertuche was invited by Miguel Santos to join Theatre Flamenco, as it's new Co-Artistic Director. Her position marks the start of a new era for the company as the reins of leadership are gradually transferred from one generation to the next over the next couple of years. This fall, Carola Zertuche will premiere two new works. TANGOS, an upbeat piece for the women in Theatre Flamenco's company, is drawn from the cante chico, or light song of flamenco. The second premiere, FARRUCA is an elaborate dance that requires highly detailed footwork. Although the dance is traditionally performed by men, Carola Zertuche's version will be performed by two female company members. Dedicated to the research, presentation, and education of a full range of Spanish dance, Theatre Flamenco was founded in 1966 by Adela Clara and has the distinction of being the first American resident dance company to stage full productions of Spanish dance in the United States and one of the oldest dance companies in the Bay Area. MIGUEL SANTOS, Artistic Director, has been with Theatre Flamenco since its inception, serving as principal dancer, choreographer, and the Artistic Director since 1987. He began his studies in classical ballet with Carmelita Maracci. His Spanish dance training began in Los Angeles in 1954, and soon thereafter he traveled to Spain where he studied with all the major teachers. Mr. Santos has performed with Teatro La Zarzuela of Madrid and both Jose Greco's and Lola Montes' companies. While Mr. Santos was performing with the Jose Greco Company, he appeared in the film Around the World in 80 Days. A three-time NEA choreography fellowship recipient, Mr. Santos has been an artist in residence for nine years at Fair Oaks Elementary School in Redwood City. He also teaches in Fair Oaks' after school program, sponsored by the San Mateo County Sheriffs' Activity League, and at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center in San Mateo. CAROLA ZERTUCHE, Assistant Director, is one of the Bay Area's leading flamenco soloists and choreographers renowned for her ability and fire. She began her dance career in her native Mexico. There Ms. Zertuche studied under Manolo Vargas and performed at premiere flamenco tablaos such as Meson de Triane. She has danced as a soloist for the Reflejo EspaƱol Company under the artistic direction of Pilar Rioja, and with Maria Elena Anaya's company, under the artistic direction of Manolo Vargas. She also studied extensively in Spain. In 2002, Carola was nominated for an Isadora Duncan award for Individual Performance for Solea, which she choreographed and performed as a guest artist with Theatre Flamenco. In the same year, she opened a flamenco dance school in San Francisco and self-produced her own choreography. Carola Zertuche was named Co-Artistic Director of Theatre Flamenco in 2005. ----/ Venue Info /------------------------------------------------------ Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts 500 Castro St. (at Mercy St.) Mountain View 650-903-6000 http://www.ci.mtnview.ca.us/mvcpa/mvcpa.html ----/ Additional Info /------------------------------------------------- [EMAIL PROTECTED] 650-903-6000 http://www.theatreflamenco.org/ ----/ The Squid List Admin /--------------------------------------------- The Squid List, a tentacle of Laughing Squid http://laughingsquid.org/squidlist/ subscribe, unsubscribe, change your email address or change your subscription options: http://lists.laughingsquid.org/mailman/listinfo/squidlist/ Frequently Asked Questions & Submission Guidelines Squid List FAQ: http://laughingsquid.org/squidlist/faq.html The Squid List Online Calendar: http://laughingsquid.org/squidlist/calendar/ The Squid List RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/squidlist ----/ Laughing Squid /-------------------------------------------------- Laughing Squid http://laughingsquid.com underground art and culture from San Francisco and beyond Laughing Squid Web Hosting http://laughingsquid.net friendly, dependable and secure web hosting services for artists, individuals, bloggers, non-profits and small businesses Copyright (c) 2005 Laughing Squid.
