I'm almost as new with SM as you are.  I do know mysql fairly well.  As 
far as PHP, I'm looking for a good book. Its entirely possible that it 
reads in the preferences only on login, but I would think that that would 
be a 'bug'.  I'm looking at another problem right now.  I thought the 
little that I did with preferences had them show up right now?  I'll have 
to see what's going on myself here.  Luck.
