Previous and Next will work based on the order mail is displayed in the
index. If you have your mail sorted by date descending (newest at the
top), the next mail will be older, and the previous newer.

If you don't like it, change your sort order.

I assume that there is no settings regarding
sort order under "Options". The only one that does
some kind of change of sort order is the small buttons
above the message list. The only problem there is that
they seems to reset every time i do something. Like change
from full list to paginated list. Logout/Login etc.

The little buttons over the index are your sort order controls. If you set them, they should remain set across all mailboxes (unless it is threaded) and between logins.

If you are using a database to backend the prefs, I discovered an error that prevented preferences from being stored correctly. Please give the 1.4 RC candiate (d/l the latest tarball from http://www.squirrelmail.org/download.php, and give that a whirl.
