I'd like to know why you recommended people not choose option D to
autoconfigure things for courier..

To the contrary, I strongly recommend that you DO use option D to
autoconfigure options for Courier!!

Perhaps, when you wrote that, the Courier defaults were not so well
chosen. But with 1.2.7-ish and up, the autoconfigure options are strongly
recommended!
