I appears that the directory *owner* was the problem.I set it to my web server user (it was owned by root) and set permissions to 730, and I'm good to go. I had forgotten that I had a similar permissions problem with the data directory; I reset that also per the SM website instructions. Now that I know what to search for, finding it is much easier!
