I fully understand the explanation.

So um....and the reson we can't split the attachments process into another
mini-window are...?
It's just that if you are sending quite a large file it would be good to get
the upload going whilst you write the message. Less wasted time in internet
cafes (my customers are often graduates taking a gap year in weird and
wonderful places).

I don't think it would be that messy to have an "add attachment" button that
launches a small pop-up window with a browse and ADD button which operates
on its own and refreshes itself with an "Attached Files" list.

It would certainly avoid the user mistakenly losing an entire emails worth
of typing which surely is a very important aim!
