You don't want to leave the directory at 777; that should only be for
testing.  You can set all the user prefs files to 777 and see if that
fixes it.  If so, then the 600 and the file ownership are not correct.

SSH is just what you use to connect to your host.  What you need to be
familiar with is basic unix commands.  Try "man chmod" and "man chown". 
Or search google or get a book on *nix.  Once you read up on it, these are
very easy concepts.
