set attachments directory to non-default value.
conf.pl -> 4.  General Options -> 2.  Attachment Directory

I might be wrong about your conf.pl menu layout. I don't have DeLorean
(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088763/) and can't get 1.5.3 version. :)

Maildir format is directory structure that contains new, cur and tmp
directories with messages. files with some random names in attachment
directory are not part of Maildir format mailbox. They are temp files. If
you use forward as attachment option - these temp files can contain
forwarded message. If you use attach file option - temp files can contain
your attachments.

If you really have messages stored in Maildir directory structure:
* check your system users. maybe some user has homedir in your data
directory.
* check for anything related to procmail. maybe .procmailrc files have
something related to that directory.
