I just bumped it up to 30M, which seems like a lot of memory for a
webmail app to use and it's still having the same issues. I also did
a full un-install, completely blew away any directories associated
with SM and did a clean re-install using the 1.4.2 debian package and
I am seeing the same problems. I guess the next step would be to
install from source but I'm not sure that I want to put that much
effort into, plus the debian packaging system works so well (almost
always).

"Install from source"? PHP is not a compiled language. You just untar and go.

Debian packages and others have been KNOWN to screw things up pretty badly (how hard is it to screw a simple PHP script up?), you will be much better off with 1.4.3a. From "source".

If restarting Apache fixes things temporarily for you, I'd start wondering about my Apache and/or PHP installations and stop focusing on the symptoms. :)
