Thank you very much, Jonathan !
It works !!!
I downloaded and installed the 1.5.1-devel version
(squirrelmail-20040714_1640-CVS.devel.tar.gz)
and now I open my inbox instantly !
Also I can navigate to next page and previous page very quickly .
No problems too if I change to another folder (containing itself thousands
of messages) and then back to the inbox.

Obviously, if I click the column caption to sort the messages according, in
example, to the sender I have to wait several minutes
(this is due to the impossibility of enabling server side sorting in Lotus
Domino IMAP Server)

So now I am happy with squirrelmail (usually I (and almost everybody) need
to see the messages sorted by date !!!)

thank you again,

Andrea

SquirrelMail 1.5.1-cvs addresses this issue in a way. Unfortunately to
display just 15, we have to establish what messages need to be
displayed. This is a little difficult because we cannot say "fetch
first 15 messages with sort order by date" for example, at least I
have never seen it, so please correct if I'm wrong. The 1.5 branch has
introduced some speed corrections on it by fetching only the UIDs,
instead of the required headers (subject, date, etc) for the whole
folder like 1.4 does. Then we establish which batch needs to be
displayed, and fetch just those [headers] from the IMAP server.

I might be slightly off on the description, so Marc can correct me,
but that's fairly close to the behaviour in both.
