SM is working fine against a Cyrus server, I was only wondering if the authentication could be done direct over LDAP, but, as I see, this feature must be configured through the IMAP server.

Unclear what you mean here. If your IMAP Server is configured to authenticate against LDAP, then only LDAP users will be able to login.
