From the vague description, I'd say it's more likely that when he
starts to type the username, it provides a drop down to auto-complete
the username. This is often related to the option you often get
prompted for when you fill in password boxes to remember the user/pass
combination on that site. There used to be an option under Tools |
Internet Options | Advanced for forgetting the password, but they have
this wonderful habit of changing the name of options between versions.
