I have SM running on the same host as my Courier-IMAP install and I have also installed imapproxy, enabled server side sorting and server side threading. All of these things did help - I went from not being able to pull up a folder with 27k messages in it to being able to bring it up in around 40 seconds.
Now, I know a folder of 27k messages is a little ridiculous :-) but some of the professors around here have even bigger folders. What would be the next area to look at to improve performance? The thing that worries me is that right now I'm the only user testing this system. I worry what will happen when it opens to all of our users (50-100 regular users and another 100 occasional ones). The server is 2.8GHz Xeon system with 1GB RAM (adding a 2nd processor and another 1GB RAM this month). The web server is Apache 1.3.29, PHP 4.3.5RC3 (upgrading to 4.3.9 this month).
I would suspect that the delays are on the imap side with the sorts and thus speeding up PHP might not help any. Is that a good assumption? Where should I look next for optimizations? I've looked through the FAQs but other than turning on server side sorts and threads and installing the proxy, I didn't see anything else.
The development version of SM is where I'd turn. It may not be what you want to run in a production environment, but it has a new and improved header caching mechanism. Otherwise, you do probably want to chase down other optimizations. I'd also advise that if it is a busy mail server that you separate the mail server from the web server to decrease load. Please let us know how you fare.
