and then click send the page waits for a second or two and then returns
me to the 'now blank' compose page.

In a production environment I found UW Imap to be too slow. Just a thought. Courier is much better (although you will need to move to Maildirs rather than Spools).

I don't mean to be a purist - but installing SquirrelMail from "source" is really easy. I suggest you do a:
$ rpm -e squirrelmail
$ wget http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/squirrelmail/squirrelmail-1.4.3a.tar.gz
$ tar xvzf squirrelmail-1.4.3a.tar.gz
$ cp -Rp squirrelmail-1.4.3a /Your/Document/Root
$ cd /Your/Document/Root
$ ./configure
If need be, create directories for $data and $attach. Mine is /var/squirrelmail/data and /var/squirrelmail/attach
Make sure these are writable by the apache daemon.
Of course, all of this is in INSTALL...
