I've been having this same problem over here as well. The only thing is that if you click on the 'download' option instead of the name of the attachment, the message downloads uncorrupted. If you click on the name of it instead, it gets corrupted.
Could this be a way apache 1.3.x handles it ? Most are useing 2.x but I'm also using 1.3x and see the same problems.

I have analyzed differences between original and downloaded file and i think that, maybe, there is a error in translation of base 64 attachments, but i can't say if it's real ....
