I am using an accelerator for better peformance in Squirrelmail but as the problem is at the imap level that won't help. If I use Outlook as an imap client it is still slow. One of the best solutions was to unsubscribe all his fodlers and he subscribes to folders as needed. I divided up all the sent mail into folders and unsubscribed them so he had access but did not have to parse them continually.
