we all share your fascination and that's great.

1 - usually, in our dai to day life things tend to be a flavoured mix of other
things. so, it's possible for a project to be more open source than another open
source one. microsoft has made a great improvement in it's own code management
policies. every sunday they'll publish a part of the new Jdap server's source
code in the printed press, reaching this way lots of people who cannot enjoy
internet connections due to expensive fees.

2 - microsoft really invented the open source idea. the thing is they open (by
force means) our sphinters and introduce some outrageous concepts and pieces of
hardware.

I hope I have made myself clear and we can pass on another more interesting 
subject
