Can you not show only the folders at one level?  This is how I would
expect and hope it would be.  Show exactly the same folders as you
would if it was a Unix/linux directory hierarchy and you typed 'ls'.

I have a large and quite deep hierarchy of mail folders but there are
rarely more than ten or so folders at any one level, that's how I've
organised it so that I can always easily see every folder on a single
screen (I usually use mutt) at any given level.

A means of collapsing and expanding the folder display would be OK but
really I'd just prefer to see only the folders at the level where I
am.
