You can try that, but it may be the wrong way of addressing the problem (which you seem to understand).
Could you please provide us with information about the IMAP server you are using (Courier, Dovecot, uw-imap, etc..) and which version of Apache and PHP you are running and which OS/distro you're running? Chris Hilts suggests ensuring that server-side sorting and threading if your IMAP server supports it, I definitely agree.
