blank page means php error. Turn on display_errors and set error_reporting
to E_ALL in php configuration. It is impossible to understand your problem
if you don't provide enough details and don't take standard debugging
steps (like checking your /var/log/apache2/ logs)

thumb display might be broken if you don't have php gd extension.
