I presume that you are using Courier-IMAP with Netscape. 

Courier-IMAP ignores requests to create folders with trailing .'s, since . 
is the hierarchy separator, and in IMAP, a request to create a folder with a 
trailing hierarchy separator is defined as a request to create a new folder 
hierarchy, which is not needed with Courier-IMAP. 

So, it's not clear exactly what you did.  Perhaps looking at the actual 
maildir contents would yield a more accurate picture. 

And yes, Netscape should not accept an explicit request to create folders 
that contain a hierarchy separator separator.
