Any chance that someone has gotten omail to work with vpopmail?

AFAIK, neomail don't have maildir support anymore. It was so in
the past, but the two branches (maildir and w/o maildir) splitted
for other reasons, and the one which supports maildir is now
omail-webmail (url below).
