c'mon Sam. That kind of flame is unnecessary. Solaris doesn't blow. Linux is cute and ubiquitous - that doesn't make it "better".

If your libgdbm.so.3 is in /usr/local/lib:

LDFLAGS='-R /usr/local/bin'
that won't work either (reread it). does this make Solaris blow too?

export LDFLAGS
./configure [ options ]

Lather, rinse, repeat.
easier:

cd /usr/lib
ln -s /usr/local/lib/libgdbm.so.3
